I have found a fun new hippie dippie coffee drink that I think you guys are going to love! If I told you to give up your morning coffee, you would probably give me the side eye and tell me I’m a little crazy. So don’t worry, I won’t tell you to completely give it up (because I definitely can’t), but you guys should try incorporating this mushroom coffee into your daily routine.
DID SHE JUST SAY MUSHROOM COFFEE?!
Yes, yes I did. I went there. Now let me explain.
Four Sigmatic has created a line of superfood-based drink mixes that I absolutely love. They sent me a few different products to try, and I just can’t get enough of them. Medicinal mushrooms have been used for thousands of years, and the “funguys” (ha, see what I did there?) over at Four Sigmatic are bringing them to the masses in a modern and delicious way. They want to popularize drinking mushrooms, and I can totally get behind this idea. And I’m not talking about the psychedelic kind, thankyouverymuch.
Medicinal mushrooms are one of the most studied superfoods, and they are actually used in a lot of western medicines today. Who knew?! They have incredible healing properties, and we could all benefit from adding them to our diet.
I had the chance to try the Mushroom Coffee, Chaga Elixir Mix, and the Hot Cacao Mix.
The mushroom coffee actually tastes like coffee! No mushroom taste at all. The mix contains instant coffee powder, chaga mushroom extract, and cordyceps. The chaga extract is highly alkaline, which helps to balance the acidity of the coffee, as well as provides powerful antioxidants, immune-boosting effects, and anti-viral properties. Cordyceps support the adrenal glands by providing the body with a balanced cellular energy boost.
All you have to do is pour boiling water over the powder, mix, and add creamer if desired. I don’t even miss my ‘regular’ coffee when I drink this.
The chaga mushroom elixir mix also comes in powder form, and you can just mix it with hot water, or blend it into your favorite smoothie, which is what I did. The chaga mushroom has been the most sought after mushroom in northern cultures for ages. These mushrooms offer some of the most powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory support you can find in nature. It is also incredible for the immune system, so it is especially useful when you need a little immunity boost.
I blended it into my green smoothie and absolutely loved the taste that it lent to the smoothie. A little earthy, but not overpowering.
The hot cacao mix contains Reishi mushrooms, cacao powder, coconut palm sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, and stevia. Reishi is known to calm you down and help you get better sleep by regulating hormonal balance and lowering cortisol levels. Reishi is so popular because of its power to balance the systems of the body.
This is the only one that I had to try twice before I actually liked the taste. I’m not going to lie to you guys, I didn’t love it with just hot water. They say to drink it sort of like you would drink espresso, with a small amount of hot water, but I didn’t care for the taste of it when made that way. BUT, when I dressed it up a little bit by mixing it with warmed almond milk and a little bit of stevia, it was much better. It was not overly sweet, and had a really nice, rich chocolatey taste.
Great news! Four Sigmatic was kind enough to extend a 15% discount code to TWK readers! Use code ‘wheatlesskitchen‘ to receive your discount! I know you guys are going to love these fun new elixir mixes!
